How to ANSWER an ARROWWORD PUZZLE

An arrowword puzzle is not typical here in the Philippines; however it's about time to use another variety of crossword puzzle. This type is believed to have originated from Scandinavia as it is also called the Scandinavian crossword.

Here's a sample puzzle I made.

FEATURES

• ARROWS

These would signify where you should begin to answer.

• X

This may not be present in all arrowwords but this is one technique used to mean that you have to stop writing letters.

• SOLUTION

You may or may not see this in the arrowword you are answering right now but in case you see this then this only means the words you form in these sections are essential to the completion of a quote or to answer a question.

In this example, you'd see the quote to complete at the topmost portion of the puzzle.

Then somewhere in your puzzle you'd see the word SOLUTION. These are numbered in the order they would complete the quote or answer a certain question.

• GRIDS

Each empty box or grid requires only one letter. Depending on the creator, clues like given letters could be found.

So to answer the question: HOW TO ANSWER THIS?

• Start anywhere especially to the clues you are most confident. Remember, one box, one letter.
• Make sure to write where the ARROWS point to.
• If there are quotes you need to complete then you could find them in highlighted boxes. You could answer this immediately if the quote is familiar to you.
• If you see X, it means stop writing.
• If you bump into another clue, it also means stop writing ( I know, it's a no-brainer, but just in case.)
• Lastly review your answers.

Class Task: TABULATING DATA

 After learning about the types of graphic organizers, let's take a pit stop to tabulate data using a NUMERIC TABLE.

WHAT TO DO:

 1. Observe the components of the table as these are the things expected of your table.

 2. Read the paragraph thoroughly.

Accidents happen anywhere. So even when you are in your workplace, it is still inevitable; however, we always hope that such should not come to a worst case scenario. In our workplace, a total of 57 cases of injury were incurred last year. There were 14 occurrences of a fall which amounts to 30 percent of the total case. Those who got cuts reached 8 which is 17 percent. Well, thank God we have lower cases of burns, which only recorded 3 cases, 6 percent. And a much lower number of occurrences for back injury which incurred only 2 cases; that is just 4 percent. But back injury, that is something big. There are also 11 other traumas incurred amounting to 23 percent. Lastly 19 percent of unspecified injuries were recorded; that’s 19 cases. Hopefully this year is going to be better.

3. Make a your own numeric table to present the data found in the paragraph you've just read.

4. Refer to the given example to make sure the components are complete.

ODYSSEY in COMICS

Here's another task I'd like my students to take part in. Here it is:

WHAT TO DO

1. Read the summary I wrote. Click the title The Odyssey: Simplified and Summarized
2. Observe the COMICS I made for the summary. By so doing you'd know there aren't speaking lines yet.
3. Write the dialogs of the characters for the portion of the Odyssey assigned to your group.

NOTE: This task shall be done in class. You would also know which part of the story you should work on during class. So good luck!

 MY BROTHER'S PECULIAR CHICKEN is a story written by Alejandro Roces. Watch the video and read with me to understand the story to it's fullest.

WHAT TO DO:

1. Read the story through the video.
2. Write down important details of the story in your notebook like the characters, setting, author and the important events that make up the story.

         - You are to work by pairs during the class activity however,           

           your  notebooks shall be individually checked to ensure you have 

           contributed to your team.

4. Templates for the task shall be distributed during class so be ready.

        - This task shall be accomplished within the period only. So make sure you 

           have read the story and did the necessary things to be done before going to class.

THE TROJAN WAR: Class Task

 Here's how I present the ILIAD by HOMER through the retelling of EDITH HAMILTON. I divided it into parts and made TITLES for each, however it is not done yet.

WHAT TO DO:

1. Watch the video assigned to you by your leader for the task to be done during class. Refer to Google Classroom for your groupings.

2. Take note of the CHARACTERS and the important events or the HIGHLIGHTS of the story. You could use your notebook for this.

3. During class, each member will have to share the story to the group.

4. Now that your group already know every part of the ILIAD assigned to you, FIND OUT what happened after the last part of my video. Find out how the story ended.

5. Be ready for the group task and make sure you have a significant contribution to the group.

How to write a SETTING

Here's how to write a setting for a play:

1. Picture out the set in still photo.
2.  Use appropriate descriptive words to successfully paint your setting. Be reminded that the setting you are writing is the picture everyone sees before the director says "ACTION".
3. The setting do not have to be in complete sentences though a PERIOD is used to separate the components. However, make sure the setting still has a complete thought to give a lucid picture.
4. Make sure your setting has complete components:

• PLACE   -  WHERE the act takes place
• TIME    - WHEN the act takes place. Could be specific or not. You may use the following: early 90's, mid 90's, late 90's -  Early 90's may refer to 1990- 1993; Mid 90's may refer to 1994-1996; Late 90's may refer to 1997 to 1999. Time also refer to time of the day like the exact hours or say morning, afternoon, midday, midnight, dawn, dusk, twilight, night. Or it could also be a certain era like, the Medieval times, Renaissance, Victorian Age, etc.
• PROPS - Short for properties. These are the objects used in the set including those carried or held by the character.
• CHARACTER - The characters name must me written in all capital letters if it is the first time the character comes out in the entire play. The character in the setting must not be moving around. He/she should be steady and stay put until the director says "ACTION".
• AGE  - How old the character is. You indicate the exact age or you may use the following: early 50's, mid 50's, late 50's -  Early 50's may refer to 50 - 53 ; Mid 50's may refer to 54-56; Late 50's may refer to 57 to 59. O
• ACTION  - These are verbs usually ending in '-ing' with the auxiliary omitted. These actions are not those that create movements. These are examples: looking, staring, holding, sitting, standing, facing, listening, paying attention, etc. Remember we do not let the character move around until the director says "action'.
• PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION  - This gives us a vivid picture of the character in connection with those around him or her.

TROJAN WAR | THE WAY TO ILIAD

Each student should be assigned a character from the story days before the discussion. Their task is to be able to talk about what the character did in the story with the help of Google of course or if they have the book, the better.

During the lesson proper students are given hand outs (plus a huge copy on the board).

                                    

The teacher initiates the discussion and guides the flow of the story through students' contribution. The latter are the one's who talk about what happened in the story or who the character is.

At the end of the discussion, students then RETELL the Iliad continuously; from the first sharer to the last.

To ensure that everyone understood the story, each one of them were asked to retell the ILIAD in CEBUANO. The version you are about to read is one of the most hilarious one. Here goes Joel Econas' Cebuano version of the ILIAD.

So ang gipili niya nga pupick kung kinsay pinakagwapa sa ilaha kay si Paris, isa ka prince sa Troy. Ni offer si Hera ug power nga makarule gyug siyag mga countries. Si Athena kay ni offer ug glory and wisdom in war, pero si Aphrodite kay ni offer sa pinakagwapa nga babaye sa kalibutan; si Helen of Sparta.      Pagkahibalo ni Menelaus nga nawagtang iyahang asawa, iyaha gipatawag ang mga suitors ni Helen (kay di man gyud mu work ang diplomasya sa Troy) para ilaha kuhaon unya iuli balik sa Greece kay naa man toy gi swear nga oath ang mga nanguyab ni Helen nga ilaha gyud siya idefend bisang magkamatay na. So, gi assemble na nila ang ilahang mga armies; si Agamemnon ang nag lead. Sa ilahang journey padung sa roy, nakaencounter gyud dilag adversity. Nakaviolate diay si Agamemnon ug rule ni Artemis nga sa isa ka account, nakapatay siyag mananap nga di dapat patyun unya in another account naghinambug siya.      Nag one-on-one sa toh sila Paris ug Menelaus unya di raba gyud na may si Paris ug close combat (igat man kaayo siya, ganahan gyud siya mag archer). Katong hapit na gipatay ni Menelaus is Paris kay giluwas siyang Aphrodite unya gitupad kang Helen sa katri.

     Si Achilles ang pinakamay nga warrior sa mga Greeks. Pag baby niya, gituslob siyas tubig sa river Styx sa iyahang inahan nga way buot ( wa giapil ang tiil so di gyud siya impervious to damage). Ngluod siyang Agamemnon kay gikuha man ang iyahang prize (Si Briseis) katong naa silay gi atake nga lugar. Giuli man nila si Chryseis (ang prize of war ni Agamemnon) kay anak man diay siya sa pari ni Apollo unya nag ampo man ang pari nga maytag gabaan ang mga Greeks. So, nagsend si Apollo ug plague. Mao na nabalik gyud si Chryseis.

     Ang luod-luod n Achilles kay naabot sa point nga di na kono siya ganahan muapil sa gubat (lami kaayo iparis ni Eris) mao na nagkapildi-pildi ang mga Greeks. Namatay si Achilles pero namatay sad si Paris tungod ni Philoctetes (kaliwat ni Hercules nga gibiyaan sa mga Greeks tungod sa kabaho sa iyahang samad). Ni withdraw ang Greeks unya gibuhat toh nila ilahang plano. Naghimo  silag kabayo nga kahoy(si Odysseus ang bright kaayo nga naka-idea ani) nga naay sud nga mga sundalo unya gi send toh sa gates sa Troy kay GIFT daw. Naa toy pari nga niingon nga beware isla sa mga gifts sa Greeks pero ni send si Posidon ug sea serpent para tukbon ang maong pari. Abi tuod sa mga Trojans nga kadto sinyales nga dapat pasudlon gyud ang maong kabayo. Sa dihang nakasulod na ang kabayo grabe and kalipay sa mga Trojans kay feel nila nga sila gyug nadaog. 1. Compose a lyric poem. Make sure it contains all lyrical devices.

2. Think of a film you've seen that might have shown the message of your poem.

3. Grab an image as well as it's cover from google.

4. Arrange the aforementioned in a good layout (something pleasing to the eyes).

5. Your project must be printed in a short bond paper (8.5 x 11 landscape).
      Note: Do not print it on a photo paper or any cardboard type of special paper.
6. The project must also contain credits as to where you took the images from.
7. Do not forget to write your name as author.
8. Deadline of the project is on Dec. 11, 2015.

HOW TO MAKE A CROSSWORD PUZZLE

     Technology makes life easy. There is no doubt about that. Most of the time all you gotta do is “copy and paste” or “drag and drop” and the like. Why complicate things when there is an easy way? Completely understandable.

     The Philippines being a third world country, may have embraced technology, but let’s face it, most school’s are not abreast with the latest technology directed to education. So most classrooms are still those of the traditional chairs and chalkboard type.

     The point in all this is that, though crossword puzzles are easily done with the aid of computers, still we let students do them manually.

     And so here it goes…

1. Make a list of words depending on the topic or theme of your choice.

2. Prepare the materials: pencil, ruler, eraser, marker and bond paper.

   * Or if you have a graphing paper, you need not necessarily have to prepare all the aforementioned.

3. Draw horizontal and vertical lines using your pencil and ruler to form grids/blocks.

* Or if you have a graphing paper, you need not go through all the aforementioned.

4. Write the words lightly across or down the grids. Make sure to use pencil to easily erase the words later.

* Each word must be formed as part of another. In other words, they must be connected.

5. Assign numbers to each word. The numbers must be written in the first letter of every word.

* A word that is formed from the same beginning letter is assigned only to one number.

6. Trace the blocks containing letters with a marker. Then, shade the empty grids/blocks.

7. On a separate sheet, list down all the words(including the numbers) written ACROSS and those that are written DOWNwards.

* This only serves as basis for the next step.

8. Below your crossword puzzle, write questions/meanings/synonyms/clues that give hint to the missing words. Classify the clues as ACROSS or DOWN.

9. Erase the letters you wrote on each block leaving only the numbers.

10.         Now, you have a crossword puzzle. You are now ready to ask a friend to answer it.

IT PAYS TO ALWAYS HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN. So no matter which road life may drag our feet into, we will always find a way to get through it because we’ve been trained with the basics. We do not only go to school in order to get a degree. We go to school to be educated, to be streetwise and be prepared for life.
